Help us keep Laurel SAFE!
We need to demand that the City of Brea keep Gaslight Square's zoning protections in place! A Drive-Thru Restaurant Entrance 30 Feet from the Laurel Elementary School Entrance is a Daily Danger. A new application to change the General Plan and Zoning to allow Drive-thrus in Gaslight Square has been initiated. Elementary Schools and Drive-thrus don’t go together. The volume of traffic will be unsafe. If you agree, do this: Before July 20th, 2022, email the City of Brea that the current General Plan and Zoning must be retained to keep the community safe: Email your comments to: Cecilia, Assist Planner, Planning Division [email protected] Planning Commission [email protected] City Council [email protected] History: On February 16th, 2021 Brea City Council Approved a project to allow a Raising Cane’s location in front of Laurel Elementary School in spite of current General Plan and Zoning prohibiting drive-thru restaurants in Gaslight Square. With community support, SAFE filed a lawsuit and the City of Brea was required to rescind approval of the project on February 15, 2022. We need your help again.

Safety is always an ongoing concern. We need to be diligent to help keep the kids at Laurel Elementary and our community safe.
Currently, there is a new proposal to redevelop Gaslight Square (the area next to Laurel) to include 4,400 square feet of restaurant space with a drive thru and 3,600 square feet of medical and retail space. This is the exact same space that Raising Cane's withdrew their proposal from (mainly because of our efforts). In this new proposal, no specific tenants or businesses are mentioned (so far). A full Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will be required for this development. For more information about the scoping meeting for this project on June 28th and to provide feedback, check out the link below: https://www.ci.brea.ca.us/.../13412/FINAL_NOP-June-20-2022 On Friday, September 3rd, Raising Cane's attorneys notified SAFE's legal team that they are withdrawing the project. Attorneys are negotiating the details to further ensure the safety of the Laurel community and their neighbors.
More details are still to come. Stay tuned. SAFE has filed suit to prohibit construction of a Raising Cane’s fast food drive-thru across Flower Avenue from Laurel Elementary.
SAFE initiated the lawsuit. The hearing was originally scheduled for November 2021. The decision will be based on technicalities. SAFE contends the City did not follow its own rules for development. This is not an appropriate location for such development. You can read the opening brief here. |
